Bell’s Palsy Recovery?
blondgurl_05
I have had Bell’s for 10 days now and I am starting to get get slight movement…not a lot but more than I had. Can anyone tell me how long (on average) a complete recovery will occur after the first signs of recovery? Thanks A Lot!!

I have known lots of people with Bell’s Palsy. It can last for a minute or days. The neurologists say it’s caused by a virus causing a cranial nerve to swell up which then gets compressed in a skull aperature. That belief is purely theoretical though. There is no impirical evidence to back it up.
Psychoanalysts and psychiatrists, on the other hand, say it’s a form of conversion hysteria with no physical causes whatsoever. The term “hemipraxia” is what they apply to it. Conversion hysteria can be identified easily enough by three things:
It starts out with tingling. When it goes away intermittent tingling sometimes remains.
People who have it exhibit something called “la belle indifference,” meaning they seem unconcerned to the point of cheerfulness. This is because at some level of consciousness they know that the alternative to conversion is anxiety–panic. People who have suffered from panic attacks will do ANYTHING it takes to get rid of it. Conversion hysteria takes the place of panic.
Finally, conversion symptoms can be cured by hypnosis or acupuncture. If you do a little research I think you will find lots of success stories of Bell’s Palsy being cured through acupuncture. Below is a link to a study of Bell’s Palsy and acupuncture. Also something on hypnosis and Bell’s Palsy.
As for the average time it takes for the symptoms to go away after recovery starts, I had a friend who recovered completely a week after the paralysis started to subside. However, my daughter had a severe attack that lasted just two minutes, but it was replaced by a terrible panic attack. Her Bell’s Palsy never returned.
So, I don’t think there is any way to know for certain. I wish I could be of more help.
